We republish below the policy passed by the Scottish Green Party at its 2023 Autumn Conference. The party is affiliated to and works with Ukraine Solidarity Campaign Scotland, and its co-leader Ross Greer is one of USCS’s sponsors.

Preamble

In the light of the continuing Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the genocidal nature of that invasion, it is important that the Scottish Green Party affirms its support for the Ukrainian people in resisting that invasion, and for those progressive civil society organisations working to defend women, children, minorities and the environment in extraordinarily difficult circumstances.

Motion

1. Conference expresses its support for and solidarity with the people of Ukraine and particularly those Ukrainian civil society organisations working for the rights of women, children, LGBTQIA+ individuals, workers, trade unions, disabled people and ethnic minorities; and for the protection of the environment and non-human species.

2. Conference condemns unreservedly the continued occupation of Ukrainian land and the genocidal attacks on Ukrainian people by Russian 16 forces, including particularly the bombardment of civilian targets, the mistreatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war and of Ukrainians in areas of Russian occupation, coerced Russification, and the abduction of Ukrainian children to Russia; and calls for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of these forces from the whole of Ukrainian territory as recognised under international law, respect for Ukrainian sovereignty and independence within that territory by all states, and the immediate release and return to Ukraine of all prisoners and abductees.

3. Conference recognises that decisions on the means to be adopted in resisting Russian aggression must be made by the Ukrainian people and their elected representatives.
