SOLIDARITY WITH UKRAINE AND ITS LABOUR MOVEMENT
This branch notes:
1. That on 8 July Russia launched a massive drone and missile attack on Ukraine’s major cities, result in over forty deaths. The country’s largest children’s hospital, the Okhmatdyt in Kyiv, was deliberately hit. This assault has also included major attacks on mining infrastructure and workers in the Donetsk region, eastern Ukraine. It followed repeated waves of attacks devastatingly targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure in in the first half of 2024.
2. The Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths, with at least tens of thousands of civilians killed, millions fleeing the country, and millions internally displaced.
3. That in their Russian-language statements, Vladimir Putin and Russian government spokespeople have been very clear that their aim is the subjugation of Ukraine, which they regard as an illegitimate nation with no right to self-determination.
4. That the vast bulk of the far right internationally is united in support of Putin’s regime and its war in Ukraine.
This branch further notes:
1. The strong support from the international trade union movement, including from trade unions in the UK.
2. That Ukraine Solidarity Campaign (USC) is the UK-based labour movement campaign in solidarity with Ukraine and its workers, supporting the Ukrainian labour movement and left against both Russia’s invasion and the Ukrainian employers’ and government’s neoliberal policies. Its national trade union affiliates include Unison, UCU, PCS, ASLEF and NUM.
3. That since the invasion began, USC has raised tends of thousands for Ukrainian labour movement causes. It is currently running an appeal to collect funds and PPE / equipment for mining industry-linked rescue and firefighting workers in Donetsk region, eastern Ukraine (bit.ly/ukrainerescuesolidarity)
This branch resolves:
1. To affiliate to Ukraine Solidarity Campaign and invite a speaker so we can discuss the issues and what we can do.
2. To donate £… to the rescue workers appeal.
