GMB union has launched a campaign of strike action in Nottinghamshire over low pay in a dispute with Veolia, a transnational company that still operates in Russia.

Veolia UK are making profits from recycling and waste services with public funded contracts in many local authorities, including Nottinghamshire County Council.

GMB organiser Mick Coppin said:

“Veolia Nottinghamshire are raking in vast sums of money from local council tax payers. In return, they’re expecting local workers to do dangerous, difficult, and smelly work for the minimum wage. Our members can no longer afford to heat their homes and pay their bills. They’re being driven to the breadline by a multi-million-pound company.”

Veolia who can hold discussions on business operations with the Russian regime refuses to enter into negotiations with GMB union.  This is a disgrace.

Since the all-out Russian invasion Ukrainians have called on companies that continue business in Russia to take immediate steps to cut ties and exit responsibly – Veolia has refused this act of solidarity.

Veolia states by keeping its business contracts in Russia it is ‘continuing its essential public service operations.”  Meanwhile essential services in Ukraine are being relentlessly bombed by Russia!

In contrast the GMB union supports the Ukrainian people, GMB has provided both humanitarian aid and assistance to trade union members at the frontline in the Armed forces of Ukraine.

GMB members working for Veolia in London have already held protests in support of Ukraine. On their picket lines they have Ukrainian flags in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and protest at this company that puts profits before people.

Ukraine Solidarity Campaign is calling for support for the strike which commences on Monday 25 September for one week.
