An overview of Ukraine solidarity organisation in UK trade unions
Ukraine Solidarity Campaign has affiliations from six national UK trade unions (UNISON public sector workers, ASLEF train drivers, PCS civil servants, UCU post-16 education workers, GMB private and public sector workers, and NUM mineworkers), in addition to branch, regional and other affiliations. The national unions affiliated have representatives on our steering committee; we also invite solidarity networks in unions that are not affiliated to send reps. Please ask your union or other organisation to affiliate and invite a speaker to discuss working together: email info@ukrainesolidaritycampaign.org
Those national unions have all passed policy at their conferences. We also won a strong motion that referenced the work of USC at the 2023 Trades Union Congress.
There are groups of activists in a range of unions, constituted and organised in various ways, that have fought for their union to adopt strong and active policy in support of Ukraine and its workers and organised practical links, solidarity and aid themselves.
There are formally constituted networks of Ukraine solidarity activists in the following unions:
• NEU Ukraine Solidarity Network (in the National Education Union, school workers) – neuukrainesolidarity@gmail.com
• UCU Members for Ukraine (in the University and College Union, post-16 education workers) – admin@ucumembersforukraine.co.uk
• Unite Ukraine Solidarity (in general union Unite) – email info@ukrainesolidaritycampaign.org and we’ll put in touch
• UNISON Ukraine Solidarity (public sector union UNISON) – unisonukrainesolidarity@gmail.com
We encourage the setting up of more such networks – get in touch if you’d like help doing this in your union or sector.
In addition, USC also works with more informal groups or networks of activists in a range of unions including:
• PCS (civil servants)
• ASLEF (train drivers)
• GMB (general union)
• RMT (rail and transport workers)
• FBU (fire and rescue workers)
• CWU (post, telecoms and tech)
If you’d like to be put in touch with others in your union, whatever it is, email info@ukrainesolidaritycampaign.org
Please get in touch to discuss organising solidarity with Ukraine and its workers’ movement!
